  • Seeing and hearing it
  • Trying to stop the abuse
  • Hitting parent or sibling
  • Becoming physically abused
  • Being used as a spy
  • Being used as a confidante

Teenagers are affected this way: 

  • School and social problems
  • Shamed and embarrassed
  • Truancy
  • Anit-social behaviours
  • Tendency for early sexual encounters and beginning of relationships to escape home environment
  • Taking on parental responsibilities for younger siblings
  • Depression, anxiety, suicide, alcohol/drug use
